Christmas tree lights: How to put lights on a Christmas tree

David Domoney

Christmas tree lights transform a room from the ordinary to the magical. Knowing how best to put lights on a Christmas tree makes decorating more efficient and enjoyable.
With Premier Decorations TreeBrights® Christmas tree lights, you can create a neat, even, festive glow, which flatters your Christmas tree decorations and looks good from every angle. This guide shows you how to light your tree simply and safely for the festive season.

Step 1: Plan your Christmas tree lights at home

Before you do anything, make a plan. Consider where the tree will stand, and how it will be seen from your main seating area.
Measure the height of your tree from floor to tip and choose your TreeBrights® to match. As a guide, allow around 100 to 150 LEDs per foot of tree height. Heavily flocked trees may need more for a similar, full effect.
TreeBrights® are designed with trees in mind. The compact 2.5cm bulb spacing ensures even light from trunk to tip, helping the tree to glow without gaps. Choose a light tone suited to your Christmas decorations. Warm white suits red and gold, whilst cool white flatters silver, glass and modern styles. Position the tree near a power socket so cables stay neat and out of walkways.

Step 2: Prepare and shape the tree

A well-lit tree starts with good shaping. Once your stand is ready and level, assemble the Christmas tree, checking it’s straight and secure before adding any Christmas lights.
Work through the branches in sections. Starting at the bottom, gently fluff each branch from trunk to tip, so they fill the space without crossing. Lift inner branches slightly so light can filter through, turning the tree as you go so the outline looks even from all sides.
Stand back to look for gaps or flat areas. Small adjustments now mean less work to hide spaces with baubles later. Keep the TreeBrights® box nearby as a guide to the level of coverage you’re aiming for.

Step 3: Test and set up your Christmas tree lights

Before you put Christmas tree lights on the tree, test the set. First, plug in your TreeBrights® whilst they are still coiled so you can check every section in one go.
Unwind the cable gently, removing tangles. Choose a static setting whilst dressing the tree. Once everything is in place, you can try other gentle patterns suited to your home and holiday style.
TreeBrights® have eight different functions, including static and soft movement. A memory chip will ensure it remembers your chosen setting, even when the lights are off. Remember, when dressing the tree, to keep the light function on static so you can see clearly where the light shows through.

Step 4: Wrap the lights from trunk to tip

Next, for the main job. This is where your planning really pays off with your Christmas tree lights. Start at the base of the tree, close to the trunk, near your power source.
Leave enough slack in the lead so the plug reaches a socket comfortably. Run the lights along the length of each main branch, one at a time. Start near the trunk, passing the cable out towards each tip, then looping back towards the centre. This pushes light into the depths of the tree.
Work in a gentle spiral around the tree. Once you’ve wrapped one layer of branches, move up to the next and repeat. Keep the distance between each loop even, so the festive glow stays balanced.

Step 5: Adjust spacing and highlight the tree topper

Then, when the lights are on, lower the room lighting and study the tree so dark pockets show clearly. Slide short sections of TreeBrights® from brighter patches into any darker spots. These small changes quickly improve the overall effect.
Afterwards, check the upper third of the tree to make sure it isn’t sparse. A few extra wraps near the top can sharpen the outline and help your tree topper shine. Then, make sure the lights guide the viewer’s eye upwards. Finish your last visible loop just below the topper, then tuck any remaining cable neatly into the back branches.

Step 6: Keep Christmas light cables tidy and use timers

Beautiful Christmas tree lights should always be safe as well as stylish. Keep the spare cable coiled neatly by the stand rather than in loose loops that can catch feet or toys.
Run leads behind the tree, not across walkways, and avoid trapping them under furniture. If children or pets are in the home, check that plugs and sockets are secure and not easy to pull. Make controllers easy to reach without digging into the branches.
Make the most of the TreeBrights® timer. Switch the lights on at the time you want them to start each evening. Then activate the eight-hour cycle so the set follows the same pattern automatically. You can enjoy the festive glow without worrying whether you remembered to turn the lights off.

Pre-lit Christmas trees for easy holiday decorating

Pre-lit Christmas trees from Premier Decorations offer immediate impact with built-in lights planned for neat, even coverage. They are ideal if you want quick, tidy results at home. Each tree arrives with its lighting already spaced, so you simply assemble it, shape the branches and start adding your favourite Christmas tree decorations.
Some pre-lit trees offer a fixed tone, either warm white or cool white lights, so you can match your tree to the rest of your Christmas decorations. Others, like the Pre-Lit New Jersey Spruce and the Pre-Lit Flocked Kenilworth Pine, feature a colour switch function. This lets you enjoy warm white for a classic, cosy look, or cool white for a crisp, contemporary style, all on the same tree.
Several designs in the range also include timers and multi-function settings, giving you reliable, low-effort light during the festive season.

Enjoy your finished tree this festive season

Once you know how to put lights on a Christmas tree properly, the whole process becomes part of the fun. Choose your tone, match the TreeBrights® bulb count to your tree height, and take your time wrapping each branch from trunk to tip.
Whether you enjoy lighting a tree yourself with TreeBrights® or prefer the speed and simplicity of a pre-lit Premier tree, the goal is the same. A well-lit Christmas tree brings the holiday season to life. With thoughtful spacing, simple safety checks and quality Christmas lights, your tree will shine beautifully and help set the scene for festive memories at home.
